Kappa Alpha Theta

Eta Kappa Chapter John Carroll University

New Member Orientation

Kappa Alpha Theta chapters initiate their new members between 4-6 weeks after Bid Day. This program covers the following topics:

  • Zero-tolerance hazing policy and risk management
  • Theta history
  • Scholarship
  • Leadership
  • Personal excellence
  • Ritual appreciation

In addition to these topics, Theta new members also complete Alcohol Skills Training Program (ASTP). Kappa Alpha Theta was the first women's fraternity to endorse and require that all members complete online alcohol education. ASTP is unlike most alcohol education programs because it acknowledges that college students may choose to drink. Rather than only trying to impose abstinence, it recognizes that any steps taken towards risk reduction are steps in the right direction. Through ASTP, Kappa Alpha Theta joins other interfraternal organizations in offering a program that focuses on risk management and educating our members through conversation and educational programming. For more information, please visit the Kappa Alpha Theta website.

Member Orientation is also a time for the new members to familiarize themselves with one another and the sisterhood that they have decided to join. New members are encouraged to attend sisterhood and social events to meet all of their new sisters. In turn, current members are encouraged to come to member orientation meetings to meet the new members and share their own personal experiences and memories about Theta.

Each new member is given an academic mentor and a big sister. Academic mentors are great resources for the new member to have during the orientation process. The mentor is someone for the new member to look up to and come to with questions about the orientation process or academic life in general. Typically, an academic mentor is an upper classman in a similar major to the new member. Big sisters are selected based on deeper personal relationships created by the new members with a current member during the orientation process. The CEdO organizes different opportunities for the new members to meet potential big sisters, as well as the reveal before initiation.
